Trump Says US Must Control Greenland to Counter Russian and Chinese Influence

Donald Trump has said the United States needs to “own” Greenland to stop Russia or China from gaining influence in the strategically important Arctic territory, renewing a controversial stance that has drawn strong reactions from allies.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump stressed that the US must have full ownership of Greenland rather than relying on defence agreements or military leases. He claimed this was necessary to protect American security interests and prevent rival powers from establishing a foothold on the island.

“We are going to do something about Greenland, whether they like it or not,” Trump said, adding that the US could pursue control “the easy way or the hard way.” He repeated concerns about possible Russian or Chinese influence, though no public evidence was presented to support these claims.

The United States already maintains a military presence in Greenland under a long-standing defence agreement with Denmark. This includes a US base in the northwest of the island, where more than 100 American personnel are stationed. Trump argued that such arrangements are not enough, saying ownership provides stronger and more permanent security than leased access.

Greenland holds major strategic importance due to its location between North America, Europe, and the Arctic. It plays a key role in early warning systems and monitoring military and naval activity in the region.

Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected any idea of US ownership. Danish leaders have warned that any attempt to take control by force would damage NATO unity and undermine post-World War II international norms. Several European allies, including France and Germany, have also stated that Greenland’s future can only be decided by Denmark and Greenlandic authorities.

Trump first raised the idea of buying Greenland in 2019, which was quickly dismissed at the time. His renewed focus comes as interest in the Arctic grows due to climate change, which is making the region more accessible. Greenland is also believed to have valuable natural resources, including rare earth minerals and potential oil and gas reserves.

Greenland’s political leaders responded by reaffirming their commitment to self-determination. In a joint statement, they said the people of Greenland do not want to become Americans or remain under external pressure, stressing that decisions about their future belong solely to Greenlanders.
