Twitter to Allow Publishers to Charge Users Per Article Read
Over the weekend, Elon Musk proposed a concept for his Twitter platform, enabling content creators to charge users with a single click for each item they consume.
Musk, a billionaire entrepreneur, clarified on Twitter that this feature would allow occasional readers who are not interested in a monthly subscription to pay a higher price for individual articles. He also expressed that this strategy would benefit both media organizations and the public.
During ongoing turmoil to make Twitter profitable, Musk announced that the scheme would commence the following month. However, he didn’t provide details on the cost or the percentage cut Twitter would receive.

Media companies have encountered difficulties creating subscription plans to cover operational expenses as readers have become accustomed to obtaining news for free online.
There are concerns about Musk’s proposal and how he plans to succeed in implementing the micropayment strategy where others have failed before.
A Columbia Journalism Review article written by James Ball, a British writer, outlined several issues with micropayments experienced by significant publishers worldwide.
- “Expressing his approval, Greg Autry posted on Twitter, ‘That’s a brilliant concept.’ Despite regularly contributing to esteemed publications such as Forbes, Foreign Policy, and Ad Astra, I am disheartened when my written work is restricted by paywalls that fail to entice my audience. Therefore, this is the optimal solution.
- “Carlos Gil, an expert in marketing and a published author, tweeted his support for the idea of a news pay-per-view that does not give consumers the impression of buying something.”
