Hamas’s acceptance of key elements in former U.S. President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan has drawn widespread international support, with leaders calling it a rare chance to end the devastating war.
Qatar, Egypt and Turkey hail move
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry welcomed Hamas’s statement, particularly its “readiness to release all hostages,” and backed Trump’s call for Israel to halt its bombing campaign.
Egypt praised the group’s response, calling the plan a “realistic political vision” that could bring stability to the Middle East.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan described the move as “constructive” and urged Israel to “immediately stop all attacks on Gaza.”
Europe sees ‘opportunity for peace’
French President Emmanuel Macron said Hamas’s commitment opened the way for “decisive progress towards peace,” while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared that “peace in Gaza and the release of hostages are within reach.”
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the development a “significant step forward,” while Italy’s Giorgia Meloni reaffirmed “full support” for Trump’s mediation.
UN urges sides to seize moment
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said he was “encouraged” by Hamas’s readiness and urged both parties to “seize the opportunity” to end the conflict.
Broader international response
Australia’s Anthony Albanese welcomed the progress but pressed Hamas to “lay down its arms and release all hostages without delay.”
Colombian President Gustavo Petro struck a sharper tone, calling for an end to “genocide” and even pledging Colombia’s army would stand with Trump if military action were taken to “stop oppression over Palestine.”
Canada thanks Trump for ‘essential leadership’
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also welcomed Hamas’s commitments, saying they marked “a positive step toward peace.” He thanked Trump for his “essential leadership” and pledged Canada’s support for humanitarian aid delivery in Gaza.
