The United Nations’ Green Climate Fund (GCF) has approved $250 million to support countries facing climate challenges linked to melting snow and glaciers, with Pakistan named as one of the key beneficiaries. The funding will be managed and implemented through the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Pakistan’s northern Swat River region will receive major support under the project. The area has been increasingly affected by climate change, which has led to unpredictable floods, droughts, and declining water supply. The initiative aims to improve water management systems, protect farmland, and safeguard local communities living in vulnerable mountain zones.

The ADB stated that the project will also focus on empowering women in rural areas. Women-led farming businesses will be encouraged and supported, helping them play a stronger role in climate-resilient agriculture.

Along with Pakistan, the program will be rolled out in Central Asian countries and other regions experiencing glacier melt and water instability. Over the next decade, ADB plans further investments to strengthen water distribution networks, irrigation systems, and agricultural productivity.

According to project forecasts, around 13 million people will directly benefit. The support is expected to help communities adapt to changing weather patterns, protect freshwater resources, and secure livelihoods for future generations.
