The Trump administration has stopped issuing work visas for foreign commercial truck drivers, citing highway safety and the protection of American jobs.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the move Thursday night on X, saying the growing number of foreign drivers on U.S. highways was “putting American lives at risk and hurting American truckers.”
Foreign drivers are currently able to get U.S. commercial licenses if they hold valid work permits, such as the short-term H-2B visa or the long-term EB-3 visa, which can lead to a green card.
The decision follows a deadly semitruck crash in Florida earlier this week that killed three people. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said federal regulators are investigating both the driver and the trucking company, White Hawk Carrier, involved in the accident.
