Valentine’s Day is celebrated on the 14th of February every year. It’s a day of love, romance, and being grateful for your loved ones. On Valentine’s Day people express their love for their loved ones through cards, gifts, and greetings.

Valentine’s Day is not limited to lovers or couples. It is basically an expression of love and gratitude for being blessed with loved ones. A person can express his/her love for friends too.

History of Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day’s history dates back thousands of years, and many different stories are associated with the origin of this day. Few say it is named after a Priest who served during the third century in Rome. The Emperor Claudius II of the era declared that single men fight better at wars than those with wives or children and prohibited the marriage of young men. During this time, Priest Valentine refused to obey orders and continued to secretly perform the marriages of young lovers. He was put to death when the Emperor discovered his actions.

According to several other narratives, Valentine was killed because he helped Christians escape the torturous Rome Prisons. Another storyteller claimed that a prisoner named Valentine sent greetings to a girl, possibly the jailor’s daughter, who used to come and see him in prison. He wrote a letter before his death for the girl and signed it with “From Your Valentine”. This expression of Valentine remained an expression of love for centuries and is in use even today.

Although it is not clear which story is the exact truth behind Valentine’s Day, one thing is clear; the message is “Love”!

Valentine’s Day Gifts and Traditions in 2023

Valentine’s Day is popular and is celebrated with great joy in America, Canada, Australia, France, Mexico, Argentine, and several other countries.

By the middle of the 18th century, it was usual for friends and lovers of all social groups to exchange tiny tokens of affection or handwritten notes; by 1900, printed cards began to replace handwritten letters due to technological advances in printing. At a time when expressing one’s feelings directly was discouraged, ready-made cards were a convenient way for people to convey their views. Sending Valentine’s Day greetings has become increasingly common as postal costs have decreased.

Despite the fact that Valentine’s Day is honored in most countries, several cultures have established their own traditions for this day.

Valentine’s Day in Islam

Islam asserts that Valentine’s Day originated with the Romans and is nowhere to be found in Islam, making it a Christian-only manifestation of faith.

In general, religions are defined by unique festivals; for instance, Eid is widely recognized as a special occasion for Muslims, although neither the Christian nor Jewish faiths celebrate it.

Similarly, Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that neither Christians nor Muslims observe. Muslims are prohibited from participating in festivities with no Islamic origin, which can lead to disbelief.

The Holy Quran specifies every festival in which Muslims are required to participate. It determines the correct direction to face during Prayer, Fasting, and Celebration.

Anything beyond this is considered pagan and is strictly prohibited. In the same way that Muslims have their own major celebration, Eid in which no other religions participate, Christians have Valentine’s Day and other holidays that are exclusive to their faith.

Muslims are prohibited from celebrating any of the festivals of the Kuffar, as festivals fall within the category of Shari’a concerns that must be based on sound texts.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (May Allah Almighty have mercy on him) said:

Festivals are part of Shari’ah, a clear way and rituals of which Allah Almighty says (interpretation of the meaning):

“To each among you, We have prescribed a law and a clear way.” [Al-Maidah 5:48]

“For every nation, We have ordained religious ceremonies which they must follow.” [Al-Hajj 22:67]

The participation of Muslims in the festival is identical to their participation in the other ceremonies. Participation in Valentine’s Day is participation in Kufr, and participation in some of its more minor concerns is participation in some of its branches. Festivals are one of the most distinctive characteristics of many religions and one of their most prominent symbols. Therefore participation in them constitutes participation in the most unique and prominent emblems of kufr. Undoubtedly, participation in this may result in complete Kufr.

Conclusion

Although religious scholars share their concerns regarding Valentine’s Day, it is not proven through any Hadith or Holy Quran Verse. Moreover, Valentine’s Day is neither a festival nor involves the practice of any religion; therefore, naming it as a religiously ill or wrong practice might not be accurate. Also, everyone should have freedom of expression, speech, and opinion. Everyone should still respect the beliefs and practices of others and must learn to let others live peacefully instead of spreading hatred and negativity.
