Pope Francis, the head of the Roman Catholic Church, has passed away at the age of 88 following a sudden stroke and cardiac arrest, according to the Vatican. His death marks the end of a transformative and at times controversial papacy, during which he sought to modernize the Church, promote social justice, and advocate for the poor and marginalized. The Vatican confirmed that cardinals will meet on Tuesday to plan the funeral, which is expected to draw global leaders and set the stage for the election of a new pope in the coming weeks.

Pope Francis had recently returned to his residence after spending five weeks in the hospital earlier this year for double pneumonia. Despite his illness, he appeared to be recovering, even making a public appearance in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday. His unexpected passing has initiated traditional Church rituals, including the symbolic destruction of his “Fisherman’s Ring” and lead seal to prevent misuse.

Cardinals currently in Rome have been summoned to the Vatican to arrange the funeral, which is anticipated to take place between Friday and Sunday. Notably, Pope Francis, in a departure from long-standing tradition, requested in his final testament to be buried in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major rather than St. Peter’s Basilica. Prominent figures such as U.S. President Donald Trump and Argentina’s President Javier Milei are expected to attend the ceremony.

The transition to a new pope is governed by centuries-old procedures, with a conclave likely to begin around May 6. Approximately 135 cardinals are eligible to vote, many of whom were appointed by Pope Francis himself, potentially influencing the direction of the Church’s future leadership. Although no clear successor has emerged, the process will involve General Congregations where cardinals discuss the desired qualities for the next pope.

Pope Francis’ tenure was marked by significant efforts to reform the Vatican’s administration, address corruption, and confront the long-standing issue of child abuse in the clergy. His progressive stance on social issues often put him at odds with conservative factions within the Church, who viewed his policies as too liberal. Despite this, his influence on the global Catholic community remains profound, as he leaves behind a legacy of compassion and a Church poised for further change.

The Vatican has stated that Pope Francis’ body will initially lie in repose at the Santa Marta residence, his home since becoming pope in 2013. Public viewing at St. Peter’s Basilica could begin as early as Wednesday, offering the faithful a final opportunity to pay their respects.
