Umerkot, Pakistan — April 17, 2025
Polling has officially commenced for the much-anticipated by-election in National Assembly constituency NA-213, drawing significant political attention as 18 candidates, including top representatives from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA), compete for the vacant seat.

High Stakes in Umerkot After Nawab Yousaf Talpur’s Passing

The by-election was necessitated by the passing of PPP veteran Nawab Yousaf Talpur, who had secured a landslide victory in the 2018 general elections with over 175,000 votes. His widow, Saba Talpur, is contesting on a PPP ticket, facing a formidable challenge from Lal Chand Malhi, a GDA-backed candidate and former National Assembly member.

Malhi previously served on a reserved seat and placed third in the 2018 elections with nearly 38,000 votes. His re-entry, bolstered by the full backing of the GDA, has transformed the race into a closely watched political battleground.

Polling Process and Voter Turnout

Polling began early in the morning with all election materials delivered promptly to ensure smooth operations. Voting will continue uninterrupted until 5 PM across the constituency. A total of 699,010 registered voters are expected to participate.

To facilitate a higher turnout and eliminate work-related hindrances, Umerkot district has been declared a public holiday.

Security Measures in Focus

Out of the 498 polling stations, 269 are labeled as sensitive, while 91 have been designated highly sensitive, prompting increased security deployments. Law enforcement agencies are on high alert to maintain peace and prevent any untoward incidents.

A Referendum on Regional Politics

This by-election is widely considered a litmus test for the PPP’s influence in Sindh and a potential game-changer for the GDA. Analysts view it as a referendum on shifting political dynamics, especially in the wake of Nawab Yousaf Talpur’s legacy.

As polling continues, all eyes are on the voter response and the final outcome, which could redefine the power balance in one of Sindh’s most politically active constituencies.
