Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb announced on Tuesday that income tax non-filers will have an opportunity to explain their position before facing a travel ban. Speaking in the National Assembly, he highlighted that Section 116 of the Income Tax Ordinance 2001 will now require an explanation in the declaration of foreign assets, including those of a spouse who is financially dependent on the taxpayer.

Furthermore, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) will assess whether non-filers have a history of late filing and charge fines accordingly. Minister Aurangzeb emphasized that habitual late filers will face increased fines if they have missed the income tax return deadline at least once. The federal government’s proposal aims to enhance tax compliance by prohibiting non-filers from traveling abroad and strengthening tax enforcement measures.
