Water Accord Being Flouted to Favor Punjab, Says Murad
Syed Murad Ali Shah, the chief minister of Sindh, stated that the 1991 Water Accord requires provinces to share water, surpluses, and shortages in accordance with a predetermined formula. However, during the current Kharif season of 2021, Sindh had a 35 percent shortfall during the first ten days (May 1 to 10) and a 37.7 percent shortage during the second ten days (May 11 to 20), compared to Punjab’s 17.3 percent shortage on the first day.

At a news conference on Sunday at CM House in this city, Mr. Shah discussed the corona virus and Sindh’s water difficulties. At the news conference were the relevant provincial ministers and representatives.
According to Mr. Shah, the 1991 deal established a system for allocating water among the provinces. He continued by saying that each province has a water allotment for every 10 days.
The figures for the first 10 days (May 1 to May 10) of the Kharif season of 2021 were shared by the chief minister, who stated that Punjab received 77.5 MAF out of a total of 93.7 MAF, a 17.3 percent shortfall.

Similarly, Sindh’s share was 51.1 MAF, but it only received 33.3 MAF, resulting in a 35 percent shortfall, he continued.
According to the agreement, the provinces would have divided the water shortages according to a predetermined formula, but instead Punjab received more water while Sindh became dry, according to the chief minister.
