The Punjab government has launched a Rs. 6.3 billion project to install 1,180 water filtration plants across six districts of the Rawalpindi division, aiming to improve access to clean drinking water.

The initiative will cover Rawalpindi, Attock, Murree, Chakwal, Talagang, and Jhelum, with completion targeted by June 30, 2026. In Rawalpindi district alone, 219 filtration plants will be installed across its four tehsils.

Officials say the project is designed to significantly improve public health by ensuring a steady supply of safe drinking water. Each filtration plant is expected to serve around 5,000 people, highlighting the large scale of the effort.

The project includes three types of filtration systems based on local water conditions. Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants will be installed in areas with brackish water at an estimated cost of Rs. 2.4 million per unit. MD plants, designed for freshwater areas, will cost around Rs. 1.2 million each, while UF category plants are estimated at Rs. 2.5 million per unit.

According to the Punjab Clean Water Authority, the initiative represents a major step toward addressing water quality challenges in the region while expanding access to safe and reliable drinking water infrastructure.
