WhatsApp services have been disrupted on cellular networks for millions of users across Pakistan since 10 Muharram (Ashura).
The issue is especially affecting mobile data users, with reports indicating that Jazz, Telenor, Ufone, and Zong subscribers are experiencing the most problems. While WhatsApp calls and text messages are functioning normally, users have reported difficulties with loading media files such as videos and images. Notably, WhatsApp remains fully operational for wired broadband (WiFi) users.

The disruption in media loading has been particularly severe during peak hours following Youm-e-Ashur. Despite numerous reports, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has yet to provide an explanation for the long issue. Major cellular operators are currently investigating the problem.
The issue initially extended to other apps in the Metaverse, including Instagram and Facebook, with users reporting frequent crashes on platforms like X and LinkedIn. However, the disruption is now confined mainly to WhatsApp services for mobile network users.
Earlier this week, local authorities imposed restrictions on Facebook without an official announcement, leading to widespread difficulties in accessing the platform across various ISPs. Downdetector also indicated that Instagram and WhatsApp were affected.
The restriction was initially set to end on July 17, but it appears the government is struggling with its removal or is uncertain about whether to lift it.
