The United States hosted nearly 1.2 million international students during the 2024–25 academic year, but new international enrolment fell by 7 percent, mainly due to a sharp 15 percent decline in graduate-level admissions. Despite this overall slowdown, Pakistani students continued to strengthen their presence in US higher education, particularly in science and technology disciplines.

More than 55 percent of Pakistani students enrolled in the United States during 2024–25 pursued STEM programs. Around 21 percent chose mathematics and computer science, while nearly 20 percent enrolled in engineering fields, reflecting a strong and consistent preference for technology-driven education paths.

Undergraduate enrolment from Pakistan recorded notable growth, rising 26 percent year-on-year. Postgraduate enrolment also increased by 18 percent during the same period, even as graduate enrolment from international students declined across the broader US education system.

Interest in post-study employment opportunities is also increasing among Pakistani students. Participation in Optional Practical Training (OPT) has grown, showing a stronger focus on gaining US-based work experience after completing studies. This trend highlights a shift toward career-oriented decision-making.

Data from ApplyBoard’s Fall 2025 Recruitment Partner Pulse Survey shows that post-study work opportunities are now almost as important to students as the cost of education. About 88 percent of students prioritize work opportunities, compared to 91 percent who consider affordability a key factor.

Overall, the data indicate that Pakistani students are making more outcomes-focused choices, favoring study destinations and programs that offer a clear connection between education, employment prospects, and long-term career growth.
