Nolan Church, a former Google recruiter, has voiced his concerns with LinkedIn’s “Open to Work” tag, calling it the “biggest red flag” for recruiting managers since it gives the appearance of “desperation.”
Church, a former Google recruiter, offered his insights to CNBC, highlighting that having the “Open to Work” tag on a LinkedIn profile may not be good news for job seekers because it may create the idea that the applicant is desperate.
Church claims that hiring managers would rather think they have first dibs on a highly sought-after applicant than think they are desperate for any open post.
The most ideal prospects, he claimed, usually aren’t actively looking for new jobs, so it’s up to recruiters to convince them to think about leaving their existing positions.

Church’s views were supported by Brianna Rooney, founder and CEO of the recruiting company TalentPerch, who said that openly communicating an active job hunt to hiring managers could come out as desperate. She believed that job applicants shouldn’t come out as unduly eager to land a position.
In order to avoid having their intentions made public on LinkedIn, Rooney advised job seekers to select a setting that subtly communicates their availability to prospective employers.
