While Indian mangoes face setbacks in the U.S. market, Pakistan is quietly carving a niche by cultivating one of the rarest and most expensive mango varieties in the world—the Japanese Miyazaki mango. This extraordinary fruit is now being grown in Malir’s Memon Goth area of Karachi, where it commands an astonishing price of up to Rs 300,000 per kilogram.
Known for its striking purple skin and unmatched sweetness, the Miyazaki mango hails from Japan’s Miyazaki prefecture and is considered a luxury fruit internationally, often selling for $800 to $900 per kilogram. This makes it one of the priciest mango varieties globally.
The journey of this exotic mango to Pakistan began six years ago when Ghulam Hashim Noorani imported a single sapling from Japan. Since then, he has nurtured the tree in Malir, producing fruit that fetches top prices both locally and for export.

Faheem, the gardener who tends to the prized tree, proudly notes, “This is Pakistan’s only Miyazaki mango tree, right here in Malir, and most of the fruit is grown for export.”
What sets the Miyazaki mango apart is its deep purple hue, creamy fiberless flesh, and intensely sweet, juicy flavor that literally melts in your mouth. Its unique appearance has earned it nicknames like “Eggs of Sunshine” and “Dinosaur’s Egg,” reflecting both its radiant color and unusual shape.
As Pakistan embraces this rare variety, the Miyazaki mango is not just a symbol of luxury but also highlights the country’s potential in cultivating exotic fruits for premium markets worldwide.
