On May 28, Pakistan proudly marked Youm-e-Takbeer — a powerful reminder of the day the country emerged as a nuclear power in 1998.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif commemorated the occasion by saluting the courage, unity, and sacrifices that made this milestone possible.

In his message to the nation, PM Shehbaz recalled the decisive leadership of Nawaz Sharif, who, despite global pressure and looming economic penalties, made the bold choice to authorize six nuclear tests in the rugged mountains of Chagai, Balochistan. “That decision not only protected our national sovereignty but turned Pakistan into a symbol of strength in the region,” the Prime Minister said.

He emphasized that Youm-e-Takbeer is not just a celebration of nuclear capability, but a day that reflects the unity, determination, and collective resolve of the Pakistani people. “The spirit that echoed across the nation in 1998 still fuels our journey today,” he added.

The Prime Minister also paid tribute to the nation’s heroes — from political leaders like Zulfikar Ali Bhutto to scientists such as Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan — and acknowledged the tireless efforts of Pakistan’s armed forces and strategic institutions that protected and advanced the country’s defense capabilities.

Highlighting events that led up to the tests, PM Shehbaz referred to the tensions with India earlier that month. He described Pakistan’s response as a decisive moment in history that redefined the balance of power in South Asia. “It was not just a scientific breakthrough; it was a statement of our unbreakable will,” he said.

He further stated that this day carries the same spirit that led to the creation of Pakistan under the vision of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. “It’s a continuation of our struggle for dignity, independence, and national self-respect.”

Looking to the future, PM Shehbaz called on the nation to unite once again — this time, to turn Pakistan into a strong economic force. “Our resolve must now shift to achieving prosperity. Together, we will make Pakistan a leading nation in the world,” he affirmed.
