NEW YORK: Zohran Mamdani has created history by becoming the first Muslim mayor of New York City, marking a major moment in the city’s political journey.

Zohran Mamdani took the oath of office at a special ceremony held at City Hall, where he swore in on the Holy Quran. The oath was administered by New York Attorney General Letitia James. His wife was present during the ceremony, standing beside him as he assumed office.

Mamdani, who belongs to the Democratic Party, won the mayoral election held on November 4, 2025. He secured 50.78 percent of the total votes, defeating his Republican rival. With this victory, he has become the 112th mayor of New York City.

During the election campaign, Mamdani faced racial and religious prejudice. Former US President Donald Trump made remarks targeting Mamdani, which were widely criticized. However, after the election results, Trump congratulated Mamdani on his win and said he was willing to work with him for the improvement of the city.

In his first address after taking office, Mamdani said his goal is to serve all residents of New York City, regardless of background or belief. He stressed the importance of equality, justice, and fair opportunities for every community living in the city.

Mamdani’s election is being seen as a powerful symbol of diversity and inclusion in the United States. Political observers say his victory reflects changing public attitudes and New York City’s long-standing tradition of embracing people from all walks of life.
