1100 MW Karachi Nuclear Power Plant Unit-2 to Be Installed Soon
The 1,100-megawatt Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) Unit 2 (K-2) officially opened here on Friday, with virtual ceremonies held simultaneously in Islamabad, K-2 NPP Karachi, and Beijing, China.

K-2 is a state-of-the-art third generation facility with enhanced safety systems, particularly internal and external accident prevention and enhanced emergency response capabilities.
The system has a life expectancy of 60 years and can be extended for another 20 years. It is designed to increase plant availability and capacity factor and extend refueling cycles.

According to information provided by the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), after further reactor physical testing, the plant was connected to the national power grid on 18 March 2021 for commissioning and power-up testing. With the launch of the K-2 nuclear power plant, PAEC will have six nuclear power plants in operation in the country. Two of them are located in Karachi, namely Karachi Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 (K-1) and His Unit 2 (K-2), and four are located in Chashma, Mianwali district, Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1. specified as. Previously, the total capacity of all nuclear power plants operated by PAEC was approximately 1,400 megawatts. The launch of K-2 with a capacity of 1100 MW will almost double these figures and significantly improve the overall share of nuclear power in the energy mix.
