First Unit of Mohmand Dam will Start Functioning 2025
According to our sources, Water & Power Development Authority (WAPDA) chairman Lt Gen Muzammil Hussain (ret.) announced on December 8, 2021, that the first unit of Mohmand Dam would begin operating on December 25.
The first phase of the Kurram Tangi dam will be completed in 2023, according to the Chairman of WAPDA.
The Chairman of WAPDA briefed the National Assembly Standing Committee delegation on planning, development, and special initiatives. In addition, the party toured the Mohmand Dam construction site on the River Swat.
Construction has already begun on thirteen additional locations. This contains the re-regulation pond, switchyard, access roads, irrigation tunnels on the left bank, diversion tunnels, power intake, and spillway.
It is the fifth-tallest concrete-faced rock-fill dam in the world (CFRD). In addition, it will store 1.2 million acres of water, hence minimizing the risk of flooding in Naushera, Charsada, and Peshawar. 160,000 acres of existing land will be irrigated, along with 18,237 acres of new land.
This dam will generate 800 megawatts (MW) of power, contributing 2.86 billion units of inexpensive hydroelectricity to the national system. Additionally, it will give 300 million gallons of water per day to Peshawar.
