Changes in Building Bylaws Proposed by TEPA Lahore
Lahore: The Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency (TEPA) Lahore has recommended amendments to building codes to encourage rooftop gardening and reforestation in Lahore, according to recent reports.
According to Abdul Razzaq Chauhan, Chief Engineer of TEPA, the first phase will involve planting indigenous trees on newly erected commercial buildings. In the second phase, the balconies and rooftops of towering buildings will be planted. The appropriate authorities are coordinating to promote the planting of trees on business structures, he continued.

In addition, Chief Engineer of the TEPA Chauhan stated that these more trees would minimize air pollution and smog. He continued by saying that the rooftop planter will help promote urban agriculture. In this fashion, people would also plant fresh vegetables and other agricultural products.

The head engineer detailed the technical requirements for the rooftop planting, stating that the building’s structural stability and strength were significant considerations prior to launching the operation. He emphasized that certain factors, such as the rooftop garden’s weight, should be taken into account. On the building should also be constructed a waterproofing system with sufficient drainage, rainwater management systems, and protective matting.
