China Agrees to Open Khunjerab Border for Trade
Islamabad: In response to Pakistan’s repeated appeals, China has decided to open the Khunjerab border to trade, but only under strict restrictions because to the Covid-19 crisis.

Exporters and importers from Pakistan would be required to load and unload items on the Pakistani side of the border for inspection and sterilization under the terms imposed by the Chinese government, which forbids them from entering China.
The commodities would be left by Chinese exporters in a specific area on the Pakistani side of the border, where importers could pick them up after according to SOPs, and vice versa, according to knowledgeable sources.

According to a letter the Ministry of Foreign Affairs addressed to the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan, the border was closed on December 1, 2019, as planned, due to the winter weather, but its reopening on April 1, 2020, was delayed because to the Covid-19 epidemic.
According to a bilateral agreement, the China-Pakistan border stays closed every year from December 1 through March 31 owing to extreme weather. Nonetheless, for the remainder of the year, the border is still accessible for both one-way and two-way passenger travel as well as the flow of products and freight.

Both in July of last year and again in September, the border was opened for a brief period of time to allow for the movement of medical supplies given by the Chinese to the UK to treat Covid-19.
