China Begins Construction of New Survey Telescope
In northwest China’s Qinghai Province, building has begun on a survey telescope array that will primarily be used to identify space junk in medium and high orbits, taking advantage of the region’s bright night skies.
The Purple Mountain Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is constructing the multi-application survey telescope array, MASTA, at an average altitude of 3,800 metres above sea level in the town of Lenghu, Qinghai.

The telescope’s spectrum is anticipated to close China’s technological deficit by 2023, when it is scheduled for completion.
The executive deputy director of the Lenghu Industrial Park Management Committee, Tian Cairang, stated that Lenghu has become an astronomical observation base that presently houses six scientific research departments and eight telescope projects.

Lenghu is anticipated to become China’s largest astronomical observation facility and a world-class astronomical research centre in the near future.
With a total area of 17,800 square kilometres, the town is located 944 kilometres from the capital of Qinghai. Clear nights are necessary for a world-class observatory site.
