Cold Desert Turned Green to Mitigate Environmental Problems
Islamabad: According to news reports, up to 280,000 trees have been planted as part of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Clean & Green project in the Cold Desert, also known as the Katpana Desert or Biama Napko.

The planting of trees is a part of the 10 Billion Tree Tsunami programme, which aims to reduce environmental harm caused by pollution and change arid territories into green areas.
Officials of the 10 billion tsunami tree programme (TBTTP) have hailed the tree-planting initiative ahead of Pakistan’s hosting of World Environment Day as a success story of vision and leadership.

The magnificent mountain ranges of Skardu, Gilgit Baltistan, are home to the high-altitude, frigid “Katpana Desert,” which is known for its harsh climate. While the temperature drops below -10 degrees Celsius during the winter, it is between 8 and 26 degrees Celsius during the oppressively hot month of October.
