Consortium Wins to Build 152MWs, $400M Hydropower Plant in KP
National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) approved a collaboration of China’s state-owned Sinohydro Corp. and Lahore-based Sapphire Group to develop a 152-megawatt hydropower project in KP province as an independent power producer.
NEPRA stated that the project’s expected cost is $400 million, with a loan-to-equity ratio of 80:20, and that it will be completed on a build-own-operate-transfer basis.

Notably, a consortium of Sinohydro and Pakistan’s Sachal Group was granted permission to construct the 82MW Turtonaz-Uzghor HPP in Chitral district of KP, next to Upper Dir district, four months ago. These projects are anticipated to reduce acute deprivation in these impoverished communities by providing employment and affordable electricity.
A 32 million cubic meter water reservoir with 45-meter-tall concrete retention walls is part of the Sharmayi HPP. Three underground power plants and a 7.8-kilometer pressure head race tunnel will be included in the project. The project will generate 696 million megawatt-hours of power annually.

A senior engineer with the Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organization (PEDO) previously informed Gwadar Pro that the implementation of projects involving underground hydropower plants was extremely complex. However, he stated that Chinese corporations had extensive expertise in completing such projects worldwide, including in Pakistan.
