Contract Signed WASA with Chinese Firm for Smart Water Meters
The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) and a Chinese company reportedly signed an agreement on Tuesday, March 15 to install smart water meters throughout the provincial capital, Lahore. The Xiang Lahore Water Metering Company will be responsible for replacing all manual meters with 711,000 smart meters and providing maintenance for the next ten years.

In addition, the company intends to construct a smart meter manufacturing facility in Lahore, thereby creating local jobs. According to Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Sardar Usman Buzdar, who attended the deal signing, the corporation will replace 93% of residential water meters and 7% of commercial water meters in order to monitor water usage. The meter will also eliminate manual readings, and WASA will be able to remotely record meter readings. He added that similar projects will be executed in the other major cities of the province.

Hasaan Khawar, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister (SACM), noted that across the province, Public-Private Partnership (3P) projects totaling PKR 191 billion are now in the planning stages. The establishment of the Investment Facilitation Center, Special Economic Zones, and the “Zero NOC” policy, according to him, also facilitated business.
