CPEC Plays Pivotal Role in Promoting Green Development in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, March 1 (Xinhua) — According to Pakistani officials and experts, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a flagship project of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), has played a pivotal role in promoting green development in Pakistan, highlighting China’s commitment to the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature.

In an interview with Xinhua, Romina Khurshid Alam, convener of the National Parliamentary Task Force on Sustainable Development Goals, stated that cooperation between Pakistan and China under the CPEC in the fields of energy, transport, agriculture, and industrial production has helped Pakistan advance its green, low-carbon sustainable development.

In addition to supporting Pakistan in addressing its energy problem and rebuilding its infrastructure through the CPEC, Chinese enterprises in Pakistan have scrupulously adhered to international and local safety and environmental protection norms, according to Alam.

A number of green and clean energy projects, including solar, wind, and hydropower, have been completed in the Asian nation over the past several years, reducing carbon emissions and contributing to economic development, environmental protection, and an improvement in the locals’ standard of living, according to the official.

Alam explained that a detailed biodiversity management plan was prepared for the construction and operating phases of the 720-megawatt Karot hydropower project in order to protect the surrounding environment and wildlife.

Hassan Daud Butt, senior advisor at the China Study Center of the Sustainable Development Policy Institute in Islamabad, stated that Pakistan and China have intensified their cooperation in green energy for the benefit of the region under the CPEC, thereby assisting Pakistan in mitigating the negative effects of climate change.

“Pakistan is one of the most vulnerable nations to climate change, having recently experienced the most catastrophic climate-induced floods. If CPEC progresses, it may assist the nation combat climate change by expanding investment in renewable energy, green building development, reducing energy loss, and creative practises including green finance and other measures “Butt said Xinhua.

Shakeel Ahmad Ramay, chief executive officer of the Asian Institute for Eco-civilization Research and Development, described the CPEC as a game-changer and a green corridor, and stated that the flagship project of the BRI is a people-centric, environmentally friendly, inclusive, green, and sustainable initiative.

China has utilised innovative technologies and made investments in BRI partner nations in order to promote green development. Ramay told Xinhua that China’s experience and technology may help Pakistan accomplish its ambition of high-quality green and sustainable growth.
