President Alvi Announces Elections in Punjab on April 30 2023

On February 3, 2023, President Arif Alvi signed the letter of advice from the Pakistani Electoral Commission at the President’s Secretariat in Islamabad.

  • ECP declares that it is prepared to uphold constitutional requirements.
  • Now the election commission is awaiting the governor of KP.
  • ECP’s move is a “step in the right direction,” according to PTI.

ISLAMABAD: Hours after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) suggested dates for the election in the province as instructed by the Supreme Court, President Arif Alvi has announced April 30 as the day for the general elections in Punjab (SC).

“President Dr. Arif Alvi has announced the date of 30th April 2023 (Sunday) for holding the general elections of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab,” tweeted it from the President’s office on Friday.

Dr. Arif Alvi’s office said that the decision was made by the President of Pakistan after “Considering the dates proposed by the Election Commission of Pakistan”.

The ECP had earlier today suggested that the Punjab provincial assembly elections take place between April 30 and May 7 in a letter to President Alvi.

The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Sikandar Sultan Raja, presided over the third straight meeting of the electoral commission today.

“The commission is ready to fulfil its constitutional and legal obligations after the selection of a date by the president,” It said in the letter.

The commission, however, stated in a letter to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ghulam Ali that it was awaiting his answer in light of the SC judgement.

On January 14 and January 18, the Punjab and KP assemblies, respectively, were dissolved. According to the legislation, elections were to be held within 90 days of the dissolution of both houses.

The Supreme Court, on the other hand, ordered the president to announce the election date after consulting with the commission as a result of the governors’ unwillingness to choose a date for the elections.

The KP governor was also required to announce a date for the elections.

Take The Steps in Right Direction

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, meanwhile, praised the ECP for taking a “step in the right direction” and welcomed the move.

Fawad Chaudhry, a key member of the PTI, stated in a video message that the Supreme Court had “allowed the president and the ECP to go beyond the 90-day time limit, but had used the word ‘bare minimum’ in its decision, meaning that the extension should be as small as possible.”

“We think that the ECP has taken a step in the right direction and the president now will announce a date for polls.”

Fawad congratulated the country on the development and declared it a triumph for the PTI, the country, and the Pakistani Constitution.

Supreme Court Order

In its ruling on March 1, the supreme court had stated that under “ordinary circumstances,” the elections should have taken place on April 9 as the president had announced.

“Unfortunately, we have been informed that the Constitution’s 90-day limit may not be met due to the delay in determining the date for the general election.

The court judgement stated, “It is also true that (perhaps due to a misunderstanding of the law) the Electoral Commission did not make itself available for consultation as required by Section 57(1) of the 2017 Act.”

“In accordance with Sections 57 and 58 of the 2017 Act, the Election Commission is hereby directed to immediately submit a date to the President that complies with the aforementioned deadline.

“In the event that such an option is unavailable, the Election Commission shall recommend a date for the polling that deviates little from the aforementioned deadline. The President shall, in collaboration with the Election Commission, declare the date of the general election for the Punjab Assembly “It directed further.
