Development Work on Making Defence Chowk Signal-free Starts

Rawalpindi: According to a news source, the Punjab government has planned to reconstruct Defence Chowk and make it a signal-free corridor during the fiscal year 2021–22. Construction on the project is anticipated to begin by the end of August or the beginning of September this year.

The project will probably cost 300 million PKR. After starting development work, the authorities anticipate finishing the Defence Chowk’s extension, refurbishment, and modernization within a year. By giving traffic travelling to and from the city a signal-free path to GT Road, the renovation of Defence Chowk will reduce congestion in Rawalpindi.

According to information provided by Punjab Parliamentary Secretary Revenue Adnan Chaudhary, the project has been included in the state’s annual development plan for the years 2021–2022. He also disclosed that monies have been set aside for the project. He expressed gratitude to the chief minister of Punjab for the funding’s clearance and release for the renovation of Rawalpindi’s Defence Chowk.

National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK) completed and handed the project’s design and feasibility report to the relevant authorities earlier in November 2020. The Defense Chowk is used by as many as 138,414 vehicles daily, according to the information provided in this study, which increases traffic bottlenecks.

Later in January 2021, Rawalpindi Commissioner Captain (R) Muhammad Mehmood requested that the project’s PC-1 be presented to the relevant authorities so that development work could start as soon as possible.
