Discovery of Large Coal Reserves in Thar
Monday, the government of Sindh announced the discovery of a new coal deposit in Block 1, Islamkot, Tharparkar, according to a news source in Karachi (January 31). The discovered reserves were reportedly comparable to three billion tonnes of coal, or five billion barrels of crude oil.

According to the available information, the finding was made while the Sino-Sindh Resources Ltd. (SSRL) Coal Mine Project, which is backed by Shanghai Electric and is a component of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), was mining the Thar Coal Block 1 project. The provincial minister of energy, Imtiaz Ahmed Sheikh, stated that the first phase’s yearly coal production will generate revenue for the government. Shanghai Electric further disclosed that ‘Seam A’ of the project is located at a depth of 145 meters and will produce 7.8 million tonnes of coal yearly.
