$340m WB Loan for Modernizing Sindh’s Irrigation Infrastructure
Islamabad: The International Development Association of the World Bank (WB) will lend Pakistan $340 million to assist the Sindh government in modernising and rehabilitating irrigation infrastructure.

The loan will be used to improve irrigation infrastructure and support a transition in the management of agricultural infrastructure, water resources, and the delivery of irrigation services.
Construction of infrastructure on the left bank of the Indus River will be funded by the Sindh Water and Agriculture Transformation (Swat) project.
The project will be implemented in irrigated regions of Sindh characterized by flat plains with insufficient land drainage systems. In September, the project will be evaluated.
The initiative is being created with the understanding that Sindh may obtain significantly greater economic value from water use while simultaneously improving its social and environmental impacts.

Improving water management is a priority for Pakistan, according to a World Bank assessment, and environmental sustainability of agriculture has been identified as one of the major approaches to sustain growth, eliminate poverty, and attain shared prosperity.
