The Cypriot House of Representatives approved a modification to the Civil Registry Law in an attempt to draw tech professionals to the island.
The amendment makes it simpler for foreign nationals working in the innovation and research sector to become citizens of Cyprus. It explicitly targets these individuals.
Fast-Track Citizenship for Research and Innovation Experts:
A streamlined citizenship procedure for foreign nationals working in the “research and innovation” industry is introduced under the modified statute. For those who meet the requirements, the interior minister may accelerate citizenship.
Nicolas Papadopoulos, the Diko MP, stressed that the initiative’s goal is to draw in specialized specialists by positioning it as a calculated investment in the future of the nation. He identified it as a “golden knowledge” program instead of a “golden passports” one, with the goal of facilitating residency requirements and understanding the language for foreign persons pursuing Cypriot citizenship.

The Golden Knowledge Program:
This constitutional initiative, known as the “Golden Knowledge Programme,” aims to draw in qualified workers in particular industries that are vital to the development of the country. The main changes are the length of residency and the level of Greek language competency.
Relaxations and Qualifications:
The loosened requirements include a less stringent Greek language competency requirement and a shorter residency period in EU member Cyprus before submitting an application for naturalization. Candidates must still show that they have strong morals, a clean criminal record, financial independence, and a working understanding of Greek. Applications for citizenship can only be processed for a maximum of eight months.
