FBR Generates Rs 469 Billion Tax Demand Alongside 81 Sugar Mills
Islamabad: A special audit team of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has created a demand of approximately Rs 469 billion tax against 81 sugar mills, some of them directly owned or co-owned by politicians.

In 2020, the FBR launched an investigation into alleged irregularities identified by the Sugar Investigation Commission (SIC) at the nation’s 89 sugar mills.
According to the official, during a month-long programme of forensic auditing sugar mills, FBR special teams issued notices totaling Rs 404.2 billion to 61 sugar mills in the previous two months.
The FBR regional tax offices began a composite audit exercise of the income tax and sales tax of sugar mills last year in response to the SIC’s recommendations.
According to the official, the FBR audit team also produced a tax demand of Rs 8 billion against Chaudhry Sugar Mills and Ramazan Sugar Mills, both of which are owned by the Sharif family.

According to the sources, sugar’s mill price rose artificially from 70 to 90 rupees in just one year.
