First Transgender Protection Centre Opens in Islamabad

In H-9/4, Human Rights Minister Dr. Shireen Mazari inaugurated the country’s first Transgender Protection Centre in Islamabad.

Dr. Mazari stated at the event that similar centres would be established in other cities to protect the rights of the transgender community, emphasising that members of the community should have access to the same employment and healthcare opportunities as other citizens.

The participants at the event were informed that the Ministry of Human Rights had taken various initiatives for the effective implementation of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2018, with the goal of ensuring the protection, rehabilitation, and constitutionally guaranteed fundamental rights of transgender persons.

They learned that, pursuant to Section 6(a) of the Transgender Protection Act, the ministry had established, at a cost of Rs35.8 million, a Transgender Protection Centre to protect and rehabilitate transgender individuals in need.
