FTO Recommends FBR to Take Action Against Sugar Mill Owners Evading Taxes
Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO) has vehemently advised Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to put the “Sugar Commission Report” into effect and punish sugar mill owners who report fraudulent and “benamidars” consumers of sugar worth billions of rupees in their monthly sales tax returns.

This suggestion was included in the FTO office’s budget proposals (2021–2022) for the FBR to take into account. The FTO’s urgent implementation of the report is one of its main budget recommendations.
FBR also scrutinizes monthly sales tax returns and purchase declarations produced by the mills and prepare a comparison of the sales record of the mills with the FBR Data/Returns filed by the company.
The FBR officials claimed that since the law was changed in 2005, the capabilities of the inspection and supervisory tasks have been limited, and as a result, they must rely solely on the information that the management of the sugar mills provides.

Also, FBR needs to take action so that sales tax is promptly started being collected on current ex-mill rates as opposed to benchmark rates of Rs. 60 per kg.
