Gilgit to be Next Agricultural Hub
Jamshed Iqbal Cheema, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Food Security, stated in Rawalpindi that the development of the agriculture sector was one of the government’s highest priorities, and that the Agriculture Transformation Plan was a revolutionary initiative to transform conventional agriculture into commercial agriculture.

He stated during a seminar that the government’s agricultural transformation programme not only ensures the food security of Pakistan, but also meets the physical nutritional demands of every individual.
In Pakistan, the per capita intake of fruits and vegetables was only 63kg per year, whereas in the rest of the globe, the per capita consumption of fruits and vegetables was about 210kg per year.
Cheema stated that the government was allocating different districts for various crops in order to regulate the water situation and reduce imports by increasing the production of agricultural goods.

In outlining the prime minister’s agenda on agricultural transformation, he stated that Pakistan would stop importing soybeans by 2024 and Gilgit would become the country’s next agricultural powerhouse.
