ISLAMABAD: A section of the recently remodelled Faizabad Interchange loop connecting Islamabad with Rawalpindi has reportedly subsided following heavy rainfall in the twin cities, raising concerns about the condition of the newly completed road infrastructure.

The affected section forms part of the interchange’s recent remodelling work, which was carried out to improve traffic movement and reduce conflicts between vehicles using the interchange.

Newly Remodelled Section Shows Signs of Subsidence

The reported subsidence emerged after a spell of heavy rain, although no official technical assessment has yet confirmed what caused the road section to sink.

Possible factors such as drainage problems, soil settlement or construction-related issues have not been officially established. A technical inspection would be required to determine whether the rainfall contributed directly to the damage or exposed an underlying weakness.

Faizabad Interchange Remains a Key Traffic Link

The Faizabad Interchange is one of the most important connections between Islamabad and Rawalpindi, linking major routes including Islamabad Highway and Murree Road.

Because of its strategic location, the interchange handles substantial daily traffic between the twin cities. Any damage or restrictions affecting one of its loops can potentially create congestion and alter commuting routes for motorists.

The interchange also serves as a major access point for commercial and residential areas on both sides of the capital, making the condition of its connecting roads important for daily mobility.

Remodelling Focused on Traffic Flow

The recent project included rehabilitation of the interchange’s loops and the western-side triangle. The work was intended to increase the radius of existing loops and improve weaving distances, including improvements for traffic using the Lahore-bound side of the expressway.

The objective was to reduce traffic conflicts and improve the overall movement of vehicles through the interchange.

Technical Assessment Needed

The reported damage has renewed attention on the performance of newly completed road infrastructure during periods of heavy rainfall. However, conclusions about construction quality or the project’s engineering standards should be avoided until authorities complete a technical assessment.

For commuters, the immediate priority is the inspection and safe management of the affected section. Authorities may also need to assess drainage and underlying road conditions to determine the appropriate repair measures.

The extent of the subsidence, repair timeline and official findings on its cause have not yet been disclosed. A formal assessment will be important in determining whether the issue is related to drainage, ground conditions, construction or another factor.
