Higher Education Sector Budget Increased by Rs 15 Billion

Islamabad: The budget of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) increased by around Rs 15 billion compared to the previous year, as the federal government allocated Rs 108 billion for development and non-development expenditures in the higher education sector.

According to the budget documents, the government has allocated 108 billion rupees to the HEC for the fiscal year 2021-22, including 42,4 billion for development and 66,25 billion for non-development expenses.

42,4 billion rupees have been allocated for 127 current and 39 new development programmes.

The government has allocated Rs100 million for the creation of the Institute of Sufism and Mysticism at Bahauddin Zakariya University during the upcoming fiscal year.

For the preceding fiscal year, the federal government allocated Rs 93 billion to the HEC, with Rs 29 billion designated for development and Rs 64 billion designated for non-development programmes.

Universities and HEC have demanded an increase in HEC’s funding, particularly for non-development initiatives.

In the meantime, the Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (Fapuasa) voiced worry regarding the HEC budget.

According to the report, universities requested a non-development budget of Rs 150 billion, but the government allocated just Rs 66.25 billion.
