HRCP’s Concerns at Implications of Riverfront Project
In a fact-finding report, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) raised concerns about the Ravi Riverfront Urban Development Project’s effects on the environment and on people’s rights (RUDP).

Based on discussions with civil society, including environmental activists and experts, and visits to several villages where land is being taken for the project, HRCP has reason to believe that, contrary to what the Punjab government says, the RUDP will not help the poor get affordable housing or protect the local environment.
Instead of making sure everyone is included by getting locals involved, the government is trying to force farmers to sell their land by putting the army-run Frontier Works Organization to work on development and sending police to the area to harass people.

Many of these problems have also not gotten the attention from the media that they clearly deserve.
HRCP wants all development work in the area to stop, including the buying of land, until the EIA for the project is revised with input from all stakeholders, including landowners, and compensation issues are resolved to everyone’s satisfaction.
In particular, no land should be taken over by force, and no pressure should be used to buy land.
