Hyderabad Kingsmen captain Marnus Labuschagne has backed Saim Ayub, highlighting the youngster’s development and importance to the side after their convincing eight-wicket win over Multan Sultans in Eliminator 1 of Pakistan Super League Season 11.
Speaking after the match, Labuschagne said Ayub has matured beyond being labeled an inexperienced player, praising his ability to attack, defend, and read match situations. He added that he has advised the batter to continue trusting his skills.
“Saim is no longer just a young kid—he’s an experienced player who can attack, defend, and read the game,” Labuschagne said. “I told him to keep believing in his ability because it will come together.”
The Kingsmen skipper emphasized that dips in performance during tournaments are often due to a loss of confidence rather than ability. He cited Usman Khan as an example, noting the batter struggled in earlier matches before delivering a decisive performance.
“In a tournament like this, players don’t lose their ability—they lose confidence,” he said. “If Saim wins us the final, no one will remember the earlier slump. That’s what strong teams do.”
Ayub’s PSL 11 campaign has been inconsistent so far. The left-hander has scored 166 runs in 11 innings at an average of 16.60, with a strike rate above 119, reflecting quick scoring but limited overall impact.
Reflecting on the victory, Labuschagne described it as a crucial moment for the franchise, crediting preparation and fresh ideas. He also pointed to the importance of handling expectations after their earlier defeat to Islamabad United.
On the field, Hyderabad Kingsmen delivered a complete performance—restricting Multan Sultans to 159/20 overs before comfortably chasing down the 160-run target with eight wickets in hand and 28 balls remaining.
Half-centuries from Usman Khan and Maaz Sadaqat led the chase, marking an impressive turnaround for a team that had lost its first four matches of the tournament.
With this win, Kingsmen move on to Eliminator 2, where they will again face Islamabad United on May 1 at the same venue.
