Iconic St Patrick’s Cathedral Opens Doors After Renovation
After more than 2.5 years of building and refurbishment, the primary structure of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Karachi was reopened for a special inauguration mass.
Before receiving a blessing from His Grace Benny Mario Travas, the new Archbishop of Karachi, those who attended the service were happy to return inside to hear Bible readings and the beautiful vocals of the church choir.
When asked about the “extra,” Derek D’Souza, another usher, pointed out the speakers, enormous LCD screens, and new, brilliant lights inside and outside the church.

The 178-year-old mediaeval cathedral is one of Karachi’s most recognisable structures. A monument is distinguished by its elegance, beauty, and historical significance. The department of Sindh heritage was responsible for the renovations and repairs, and engineers and architects were employed to reinforce the cathedral’s roof and foundation.
A new drainage system was developed to prevent the accumulation of groundwater. Original stone and marble have also been replaced on the walls.
