Pakistan Needs to Tax Rich and Protect Poor IMF Chief
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has urged Pakistan to increase tax collections and have a more equitable distribution of pressures by allocating subsidies exclusively to those who truly require them, according to IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva.
At the Munich Security Conference, Georgieva remarked in an interview with DW that the flood-devastated citizens of Pakistan are on her mind. She said that the IMF is requesting that Pakistan take the actions necessary for it to be able to operate as a nation and avoid getting into a “dangerous place” where its debt needs to be restructured.

She went on to say that people who can and are making good money, whether in the public or private sector, ought to contribute to the economy in order to increase tax revenues. According to her, the poor should be the ones who gain from the subsidies rather than the wealthy. She stressed that the IMF has made it quite clear that it wishes to protect Pakistan’s underprivileged citizens.
In Georgieva she stated in a different comment that tax money from the wealthy should go towards people who require assistance from the government. It is a really reasonable and compassionate request, she remarked.
She also raised the question why the rich in Pakistan should benefit from the subsidies and why rich people and businesses should not pay taxes when the country is facing such tremendous challenges.
