Instagram users will no longer have fully private direct messages after Meta officially disabled end-to-end encryption for Instagram chats worldwide.

The decision marks a significant shift in Meta’s approach to messaging privacy. End-to-end encryption (E2EE) was previously promoted as the most secure form of communication because only the sender and receiver could access the messages.

With the latest change, Instagram will now use standard encryption instead of full end-to-end protection. This means the platform may be able to access message content — including texts, photos, videos, and voice notes — when necessary.

The debate around end-to-end encryption has continued for years. Supporters argue it is critical for protecting user privacy and sensitive data, while critics and child safety groups believe encrypted messaging can make it harder to detect illegal or harmful activity online.

Meta had earlier planned to expand full encryption across both Facebook Messenger and Instagram. While Messenger completed its rollout in 2023, Instagram’s implementation has now reportedly been abandoned after years of development.

The rollback has been welcomed by child protection organizations, which say increased platform access could help identify abuse and exploitation cases more effectively. However, privacy advocates have raised concerns, warning that the move weakens user security and digital privacy.

Despite the change, Instagram will continue offering direct messaging features, though without the highest level of privacy protection previously associated with end-to-end encrypted conversations.
