ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has directed authorities to complete the Margalla Road extension towards Sangjani Interchange and the Sangjani Interchange project by December 31. The instructions came during a site visit to review construction progress and address delays affecting the development work.

Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry accompanied Naqvi during the visit. Officials from the Capital Development Authority (CDA), including its chairman, and the Islamabad deputy commissioner also attended.

The interior minister instructed the relevant departments to accelerate construction and maintain double-shift operations to meet the announced deadline. He stressed that teams should address obstacles promptly to keep both projects on schedule.

Encroachments and Construction Delays Under Review

During the visit, Naqvi directed the Islamabad deputy commissioner to remove encroachments within one week. He also instructed officials to resolve issues obstructing construction so that work could proceed without unnecessary interruptions.

CDA officials briefed the visiting ministers on the projects’ progress, design and key features. The review focused on speeding up implementation and coordinating the work of the departments involved.

The December 31 target sets a clear deadline for the authorities, although actual completion will depend on construction progress and the resolution of outstanding issues.

Margalla Road Extension Covers 2.7 Kilometres

According to the briefing, the Margalla Road extension towards Sangjani Interchange covers approximately 2.7 kilometres and includes an underpass and an interchange.

Once completed, the road link is expected to provide Islamabad residents with an additional route towards the motorway network. The improved connection could offer greater travel flexibility for motorists and help distribute traffic across the city’s road network.

The projects are also intended to strengthen links between the capital and the motorway corridor. Their practical benefits will depend on how effectively the new infrastructure connects with existing roads and handles traffic after opening.

Completion Timeline Remains the Key Milestone

The latest site visit highlights the government’s focus on completing the two projects within the announced timeframe. Double-shift construction, the removal of encroachments and the resolution of site-related obstacles are among the measures officials have been directed to pursue.

Further progress updates will help establish whether construction remains on track for December 31. For commuters, the main development to watch is the completion and opening of the road facilities, which are expected to improve access to the motorway network.

Authorities will need to maintain coordination and address remaining construction challenges to deliver the intended connectivity improvements within the set deadline.
