KARACHI: More than 20 major roads in Karachi are expected to undergo excavation from January 2027 as part of the K-IV water supply augmentation project. The pipeline installation work will cover approximately 96 kilometres of roads and is expected to continue for 22 months, potentially affecting traffic and daily commuting across several parts of the city.
Project Manager Faisal Javed shared the details during a media briefing, stating that the tendering process was underway and construction was expected to begin in January. He said the work would proceed in stages to reduce disruption for residents and road users.
Pipeline Work to Proceed in Sections
According to Javed, construction teams will excavate road sections measuring between one and three kilometres at a time. After installing pipelines in each section, crews will move to the next stretch rather than digging across multiple parts of Karachi simultaneously.
The phased approach is intended to limit the impact on traffic movement and local access during construction. Nevertheless, commuters may experience temporary diversions, slower journeys and changes to access along affected roads.
Project authorities will also be responsible for restoring road surfaces damaged during excavation. Arrangements have reportedly been prepared to address payments related to gas and electricity infrastructure affected by the pipeline work.

K-IV Augmentation Pipeline Cost Estimated at Rs. 72 Billion
The augmentation pipelines are estimated to cost around Rs. 72 billion, although the project manager indicated that the final amount could increase.
Two international financial institutions are supporting the project, while the Sindh government is expected to contribute 20 percent of the funding.
Javed said the pipeline installation was scheduled for completion within 22 months. After completion, the infrastructure would be handed over to the relevant water corporation. The final timeline will depend on construction progress and the management of technical or site-related challenges.
Project Aims to Improve Karachi’s Water Supply
The K-IV project aims to bring an additional 250 million gallons of water per day from Keenjhar Lake to Karachi, according to the briefing. The additional supply is intended to help neighbourhoods facing severe water shortages and areas without a reliable regular supply.
The augmentation work is an important part of the wider effort to strengthen the city’s water distribution capacity. However, the extent of improvement for individual neighbourhoods will also depend on distribution infrastructure and the effective delivery of water to end users.

Traffic Management and Road Restoration Remain Important
The planned excavation will require coordination among project teams, utility providers, traffic authorities and local administrations. Timely road restoration and clear diversion arrangements will be important to reduce inconvenience throughout the construction period.
Residents and commuters should monitor official updates on affected routes as work approaches its expected January 2027 start.
While the project is designed to improve Karachi’s long-term water supply, its immediate impact will depend on how effectively authorities manage construction, traffic flow and the restoration of roads across the city.
