Karachi Property Survey in Works to Increase Tax Net
According to news reports, the Sindh government has decided to conduct a property survey in Karachi to enhance the tax base by attracting more individuals.

The Sindh Excise and Taxation Department currently collects property tax from six of Sindh’s largest cities: Hyderabad, Shaheed Benazirabad, Mirpurkhas, Sukkur, Larkana, and Karachi. According to the survey, the overall property tax collection for fiscal year 2021 (FY-21) is PKR 1,679 billion, with Karachi contributing PKR 1,52 billion.
According to the information provided, the most recent survey in Karachi was done in 2001. Approximately 800,000 properties were registered in Karachi at the time. Currently, there are 947,424 registered properties. Property tax collection was assigned to the district administration during the most recent survey, but was still carried out by the provincial taxation department.

In addition, a survey of all Karachi properties will be done to update the property tax database. After the property tax is collected, the property records will be digitized, according to CM Murad. Additionally, the chief minister delegated the collection of property tax to KMC and DMCs.
The property survey project includes the creation of an Urban Immovable Property Tax (UIPT) system that would identify and tax Karachi’s urban properties. It will assist in enhancing the revenue base, and the Geographic Information System (GIS) will aid in the planning and implementation of sustainable infrastructure.
