Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has inaugurated Marka-e-Haq Square at Rawalpindi’s Kutchery Chowk, officially opening a major signal-free corridor project for public use.
The historically busy Kutchery Chowk has now been renamed Marka-e-Haq Square. The development project aims to significantly reduce traffic congestion at one of Rawalpindi’s most crowded intersections.
Following the inauguration, the chief minister visited the newly constructed signal-free corridor and inspected the overhead bridge, underpasses, and adjoining roads. She also reviewed the Annexe Chowk to GPO Chowk signal-free stretch as part of the broader traffic improvement initiative.
Provincial Minister for Communications and Works Sohaib Ahmed Bharath briefed the chief minister on the project, stating that the corridor is expected to facilitate the movement of more than 200,000 vehicles daily.
The Rs. 19 billion Kutchery Chowk Remodeling Project includes two flyovers and three underpasses, and was completed ahead of its original 18-month timeline.
Under the project plan, the Kutchery Chowk flyover and underpass have been named Marka-e-Haq, while the Jinnah Park flyover and underpass are designated as Jinnah Flyover and Jinnah Underpass. The third underpass has been named the Iftikhar Janjua Underpass.
Officials also highlighted the inclusion of a modern pedestrian bridge at Marka-e-Haq Square to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians.
The chief minister stated that the signal-free corridor would help transform Rawalpindi’s urban traffic system and ease long-standing congestion issues at Kutchery Chowk, a key junction connecting multiple major routes in the city.
The project is expected to significantly improve traffic flow and reduce travel time for thousands of daily commuters passing through one of the city’s busiest transit points.
