Land Acquisition Process Resumes for Gulberg Expressway

Lahore: On June 11, a news source announced that the Punjab government had agreed to restart the land acquisition procedure for the Gulberg-Babu Sabu elevated motorway project in Lahore.

The Lahore Development Authority (LDA) has been directed to speed the completion of this significant urban infrastructure project, according to the specifics. In 2017, the procedure was put on hold for a number of reasons. The project now costs PKR 85 billion, a considerable increase from PKR 18 billion.

According to an LDA officer (whose name was withheld), the authority has started contacting those whose land, primarily made up of dwellings, was identified and listed for acquisition under the Land Acquisition Act in 2016. To obtain their compensation as determined in 2016, these people are being asked to go to the LDA offices or the appropriate revenue department officers.

801 kanals of land were subject to a renewed land purchase process for the Lahore elevated motorway in 2016, and the final award under the Land purchase Act was announced in 2017. Some of them received compensation, but the majority rejected it, and those who did have to give the government ownership of their land haven’t done so yet.

The Gulberg-Babu Sabu Motorway project was being reconsidered by the government at the beginning of 2022. When the government was overthrown, all work ceased. In the Punjab Planning & Development Department, the revised project cost estimate of PKR 85 billion is currently being discussed. The government has also written the Pakistani Election Commission to request approval before beginning this project.

Affected people are reportedly being pressured to accept compensation and turn over ownership of their land to the government as the LDA is now tasked with finishing the land acquisition procedure. A deadline has been set for those who have already received compensation but have kept custody of their belongings to leave the property.

Muhammad Ali Randhawa, the Lahore Commissioner and LDA Director General, called a meeting to discuss the situation and gave the go-ahead to the necessary officers. In order to help people receive payment for the land they are giving up to the government, he emphasised the need for a streamlined procedure at the LDA, including a one-window counter. The undertaking is seen as a big development for Lahore and has the potential to transform the city.
