Local Communities Should Be Given More Jobs in Projects
Federal Minister of Economic Affairs Omar Ayub Khan presided over a high-level conference to examine the development of the Tarbela Hydropower Project (T5).

The World Bank has provided $390 million for the fifth extension of the Tarbela Hydropower Project, which would produce 1,410 megawatts of electricity. In addition, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has committed $300 million to this project.
Minister of Economic Affairs further emphasized the need for project authorities and contractors to hire locals, especially those affected by the Tarbela Dam. According to policy, the Minister emphasizes that locals who have suffered greatly as a result of land acquisition for dam construction in the 1960s and 1970s should be given employment preference.
The Minister ordered that all obstacles and remaining difficulties be resolved and that the project be completed on time.

At the request of the local population, the Minister also suggested upgrading the Tarbela Ghazi Vocational Institute to Technical College. In addition, the Minister discussed the idea for relevant authorities to initiate community development programs under Corporate Social Responsibility.
