RAWALPINDI: The cost of several underpasses planned under the Mall Road signal-free project has been revised, with two major structures becoming more expensive while another proposed underpass has been dropped.

According to project details, the estimated cost of the Race Course underpass has increased by Rs1,368.814 million. Its revised cost now stands at Rs4,459.904 million, compared with the earlier estimate of Rs3,091.090 million.

The Chairing Cross underpass has also seen a substantial increase. Its cost has risen by Rs901.619 million, taking the estimated project cost from Rs2,588.654 million to Rs3,490.273 million.

Meanwhile, authorities have dropped the proposed underpass at Qabristan Chowk. The change has reduced the estimated cost of the related Army Qabristan Chowk project from Rs2,679.328 million to Rs1,595.095 million.

The project design has also been revised for the Peshawar Road corridor. Instead of the previously planned three underpasses, the updated plan calls for two.

Under the revised arrangement, Army Qabristan Chowk will be connected with Peshawar Road through the Double Road. The intersection will also be remodelled as part of the traffic management plan.

The changes indicate that the signal-free project is being adjusted in response to revised designs and project requirements. While some components have become more expensive, dropping one underpass has reduced costs in another part of the scheme.

The revised estimates will be important for the project’s overall budget and implementation. Further progress will depend on approval of the updated plans and completion of the required development work.
