Massive Earthquake Killed Over 4000 in Turkey & Syria

ISLAMABAD, February 7, 2023- A deadly earthquake of 7.8 magnitude and a tremor of 7.6 magnitude has killed thousands in Southern Turkey and Syria.

The first earthquake was followed by dozens of violent aftershocks, including one of magnitude 7.5 reported on Monday afternoon in the same fault zone in south-central Turkey. Most damage is concentrated in southern Turkey and northern and central Syria. The main earthquake occurred at 04:17 local time and was felt in excess of one hundred kilometers in each direction from its epicenter, including in southern Turkey and northern Syria.

Witnesses recalled being awakened and running to their vehicles to escape the destroyed structures.

Aleppo, a war-torn city in Syria, was among the locations affected by a catastrophic earthquake. More than 1,400 people have been confirmed dead due to the earthquake in northern Syria, and over 4000 are reportedly dead in Turkey. As rescue attempts continue, the number of persons killed, injured, and displaced will likely increase.

Numerous buildings were reportedly damaged or demolished, and people were reportedly trapped beneath the rubble.

The death toll, which has crossed thousands with more than 10,000 people injured and homeless, has risen swiftly since the first quake struck early Monday morning. Twelve hours later, a second large earthquake of 7.6 magnitude struck further north.

In frigid and icy weather, rescuers have been digging through piles of rubble to discover survivors.

Turkey’s energy infrastructure has been destroyed, and videos of massive fires in southern Turkey have emerged. Social media users asserted that they were caused by gas pipeline damage. The Turkish energy minister, Fatih Donmez, admitted that the infrastructure had been severely damaged but did not mention the explosions.

Countries from around the world are contributing to rescue attempts by sending teams of specialists, sniffer dogs, and equipment. The European Union is dispatching search and rescue teams to Turkey, while rescuers from the Netherlands and Romania have arrived. The United Kingdom has pledged to deploy 76 specialists, rescue dogs, and equipment.

France, Germany, Israel, and the United States have also offered assistance. Iran and Russian President Vladimir Putin have pledged assistance to Turkey and Syria.
